The best time to visit Fort McHenry
The 7 to 9 window
This is the recommendation I would give a friend. The park is at its best on the water side early, the heat has not arrived, and the part of the site that charges is not open for business yet, so there is no decision to make and no queue to join. Two hours is more than enough for the free half.
If you want the fort itself
Come from 9:00 a.m. onwards and give yourself room before the end of the day, because the closing times are stricter than they look. Last entry is 4:45 p.m. Monday to Friday and 5:45 p.m. at weekends, and the star fort, visitor center, gift shop and restrooms close 15 minutes before the park gates. Weekends buy you an extra hour at the end of the day, which is the one genuine argument for a Saturday over a Tuesday.
Weekends close an hour later than weekdays in the summer season, so a late-afternoon visit that fails on a Tuesday works on a Saturday.
Which dates
Eight days in 2026 carry no fee at all, listed on the fee-free days page. Winter hours are a different matter: they are not stated in our sources, so for an off-season trip check the National Park Service page for Fort McHenry rather than assuming the summer timetable holds. The park closes on Thanksgiving, December 25 and January 1, and is otherwise open year-round.
Timing an activity around the visit
The 45-minute Inner Harbor sightseeing cruise runs from the harbour and passes the fort from the water, so it slots either side of a morning at the park. None of it includes entry to the star fort. That is a National Park Service ticket, sold at the gate and nowhere else.
