Fort McHenry is not where the country was founded. It is where its anthem was written, in September 1814, 38 years after the Declaration. For the semiquincentennial the National Park Service leaned on that story, with a new ranger program and a Defenders' Day billed as part of America's 250th anniversary.
Baltimore added Sail250 Maryland, a week of tall ships and an air show, with the fort as an official viewing area. This is the record as of 16 October 2026, plus the dates that are still ahead.
The quick answer
The 2026 highlights at the fort were the summer "American Anthem: 250 Years at the Home of the Brave" ranger walk, the Sail250 air show weekend of 27-28 June, the fee-free Independence Day weekend (3-5 July) and Defenders' Day on 11-13 September. Still ahead in 2026: fee-free days on 27 October and 11 November. No new 250th events at the fort had been announced for 2027 as of 16 October 2026.
What did Fort McHenry do for America's 250th anniversary?
Its main program was "American Anthem: 250 Years at the Home of the Brave", a 45-minute ranger walk that ran daily at 11:15 a.m. on the summer schedule, from 23 May to Labor Day 2026.
The NPS describes it as stories of 250 years of service at the fort, and there is plenty to cover: an earthwork called Fort Whetstone stood here in the Revolution, then came the 1814 bombardment, a Civil War prison, a First World War hospital and Coast Guard training in the Second World War. The walk entered the fee area, so adults needed the $15 entry. The NPS ranger programs page lists it on the summer schedule only; since Labor Day the 11:15 slot has been "Ranger's Choice".
The anniversaries started early here. On Flag Day 2025 the fort marked "the 250th birthday of the U.S. Army" with special programs, according to an NPS release. The fort itself is older than most people guess: building began in 1798 and finished in 1803.

What happened at Fort McHenry during Sail250 Maryland?
Tall ships filled the harbor from 24 June, and the fort became a viewing area for the air show on 27-28 June. The park closed to cars that weekend and shut its bastions during the flying.
Stars and Stripes counted 26 vessels from 13 countries, among them Ecuador's Guayas, Portugal's Sagres, Germany's Gorch Fock and the U.S. Coast Guard's Eagle, which arrived on 25 June. Ship tours were free, with no tickets (Baltimore Brew). The air show ran noon to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday over the Middle Branch, with the Blue Angels, the RAF Red Arrows, the Patrouille de France and Air Force F-16s.
The NPS closure order shut the park to all vehicles from 7:00 a.m. Friday 26 June to 6:00 p.m. Sunday 28 June. Visitors walked in through the main gate. Parts of the seawall trail closed 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the star fort bastions and outer battery 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on all three days.
| Date (2026) | What happened |
|---|---|
| 24 June | Sail250 Maryland opens; tall ships arrive at the Inner Harbor, Fells Point and Baltimore Peninsula |
| 25 June | Coast Guard cutter Eagle arrives |
| 26 June | Air show practice; Fort McHenry closed to vehicles from 7:00 a.m. |
| 27-28 June | Air show noon to 4:00 p.m.; fort bastions closed during the flying |
| 1 July | Event ends (Visit Baltimore dates: 24 June to 1 July) |

Was Fort McHenry free on 4 July 2026?
Yes for U.S. citizens and residents: 3-5 July was one of the 2026 fee-free periods. International visitors paid the usual $15 per adult.
The Independence Day weekend is on the NPS 2026 fee-free list, and like every 2026 free day it was for Americans and U.S. residents. We found no separate NPS program for the fort on 4 July itself; the summer schedule, with the American Anthem walk at 11:15, carried on.
The city's own Independence Day fireworks went up at 9:00 p.m. on 4 July from a barge between Point Park and the Domino Sugars plant (Baltimore Chronicle). The fort closes long before dark, so the fireworks were a harbor-side affair. Our fee-free days post covers the two free dates left this year.
What happened on Defenders' Day 2026?
Three days, 11-13 September, billed by the NPS as a celebration of America's 250th: a Locust Point parade, living history from 1776 to 1945, a band concert, a flag-raising reenactment and fireworks.
Defenders' Day has been marked since 1815, which makes it Baltimore's oldest holiday. The 2026 schedule ran the American Anthem walk at 11:15 a.m. on Friday and at 11:15 and 1:15 on Saturday. The NPS release added free deck tours of Pride of Baltimore II on the Saturday.
Saturday night was the big one: the Maryland Military Band at 7:00 p.m., the garrison-flag raising recreated at 8:00 and fireworks at 8:01, with the seawall trail and West Lawn closing at 5:30 p.m. On Sunday the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House held a free "Music of the 250th" afternoon (Visit Baltimore).
| Day | Highlights |
|---|---|
| Friday 11 September | 10:00 a.m. Patriot Day flag change; 11:15 a.m. American Anthem walk; 7:00 p.m. Locust Point parade |
| Saturday 12 September | Living history 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; 7:00 p.m. band concert; 8:00 p.m. flag raising; 8:01 p.m. fireworks |
| Sunday 13 September | Living history, "The Guns that Won the Battle" demonstrations, 4:00 p.m. flag change |
See the fort the way the British fleet did: 45 minutes on the harbor, out past the star fort and back.

At the fort, two fee-free days: 27 October and 11 November 2026. In Baltimore, the Flag House's 250th exhibit runs to July 2028, and the B&O Railroad Museum opens an 1828 time capsule on 4 July 2027.
Visit Baltimore's America250 page lists "Maryland's America: 250 Years of American History through Marylander Eyes" at the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House, Mary Pickersgill's home on Pratt Street, where the fort's great flag was sewn in 1813. It also lists the Great Rail Reveal at the B&O Railroad Museum on 4 July 2027. For Fort McHenry it names exhibits, tours and reenactments, but no new dated 250th events.
As of 16 October 2026, the NPS had announced nothing specific for the fort in late 2026 or 2027. Defenders' Day comes around every September, and the summer ranger schedule returns around Memorial Day; whether the American Anthem walk stays on it in 2027 has not been posted. On the water, Watermark has said in replies to Viator reviews that its 2027 season adds a 90-minute Baltimore cruise next to the 45-minute one.
| Date | Event | Where |

Where can you see the original Star-Spangled Banner?
In Washington, DC, at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. It has been there since 1907, and entry is free.
The 30 by 42-foot garrison flag that flew over the fort on the morning of 14 September 1814 now measures 30 by 34 feet, after pieces were snipped off as souvenirs. Armistead's grandson Eben Appleton gave it to the Smithsonian in 1907. The museum opens 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily except 25 December, with no tickets or timed passes. Photos are banned in the flag gallery.
A 250th-year trip that covers both is easy: the fort in the morning, the train to DC, the flag in the afternoon. Our history guide tells the story of the battle, the flags and the anthem, and what to see at the fort covers the visit itself.
