A neighborhoods van tour with a stop at the fort

A local guide drives up to 14 guests through Fell's Point, Mount Vernon, Federal Hill and Locust Point in 90 minutes, then stops for 20 minutes at Fort McHenry. Book it on your first day for the lay of the land, not for the fort itself.

Small-Group Historic Neighborhoods Tour

About this experience

I Love Baltimore Personal Tours is a small local company, and this is its most-booked trip: 480 reviews on Viator and Tripadvisor, 4.6 on average. You meet at the Baltimore Visitor Center on the harbor promenade and ride an air-conditioned van with a guide (guests name Ira and Steve most often) through downtown, Fell's Point, Mount Vernon with its Washington Monument, the Bromo Seltzer Tower, Otterbein, Federal Hill and Locust Point. Guests praise the restaurant tips as much as the history.

The fort part is short. The listing gives 20 minutes at Fort McHenry, and on this operator's tours you get out at the visitor center. That is enough to see the museum or the 10-minute film and look across to the star fort, all of which is free. It is not enough to go inside: the star fort costs $15 per adult aged 16 and over (under 16 free), sold only by the National Park Service at the desk or on recreation.gov, and the Park Service plans about an hour for it. Viator's "admission ticket free" line refers to the free grounds, not the fort.

Know the format before you book. It is a driving tour, and one guest in May 2026 wrote that it is "not an active tour": the guide points out landmarks through the windows. Most of the 480 reviewers liked exactly that, especially in summer heat. Another guest in October 2026 says an address on the listing sent them to the wrong start point, so use 401 Light St.

This tour is an excellent intro to Baltimore city and the surrounding neighborhoods. The guide was great and it was nice not having to walk everywhere, especially in August!

This tour is an excellent overview of what Baltimore has to offer. It made me want to come back! [...] The meeting place at the harborfront Visitor Center was convenient, and the van was clean and comfortable.

If staying in Baltimore I recommend this tour early in your stay to get a great lay of the land and recommendations on sites to see more in depth and even some restaurants to try.

Tips before you book

  • Type 401 Light St into your map app. A guest in October 2026 says another address on the listing sent them to the wrong place.
  • Bring small bills for a tip: one reviewer had no cash and could not tip his guide.
  • Do it early in your trip. Several guests say the guide's tips shaped the rest of their stay.
  • If the fort is a priority, come back on your own: buy the $15 pass on recreation.gov, catch the 10:00 a.m. flag change and give it two hours.
  • Children get a lower rate on Viator, and infants ride on a lap or in an infant seat.

Frequently asked questions

How long do you get at Fort McHenry on the neighborhoods tour?

The listing gives 20 minutes, at the visitor center. That covers the free museum or the 10-minute film and a look at the star fort, not a visit inside it.

Is Fort McHenry entry included?

No. The grounds and visitor center are free, which is why Viator lists the stop as free. The star fort costs $15 per adult aged 16 and over (under 16 free) and only the National Park Service sells it, at the desk or on recreation.gov. See the Park Service fees page.

Do you get out of the van in the neighborhoods?

Mostly not. It is a driving tour, and a guest in May 2026 noted that the guide pointed out landmarks through the windows. The fort is the main stop where you step out.

Where does the tour start?

At the Baltimore Visitor Center, 401 Light St, on the Inner Harbor promenade. It ends back there after about 90 minutes.
